6 Questions for R. Barri Flowers:

1.  Tell us about your process from having an idea for a book, to writing it, and finally letting someone read it?

Great question! Well, when an idea pops into my head, I usually discuss it with my wife and the pros and cons of proceeding forward with.

Once I decide to write the novel, I then work on developing a full blown plot and creating three dimensional characters. Then comes an outline on the story, subplots, scenes, conflict, and a satisfying conclusion.

I then simply follow through and work steadily till wrapping up project.

Beyond the print and eBook versions, it has become increasingly important to me to have all my books in audio as well, given the greater interest these days in audio fiction with readers using their iPods, tablets, cell phones, and computers to listen to books instead of on CD.

Finding the perfect narrator simply comes down to the audition process and connecting with someone who has the right voice, style, and enthusiasm for the job; while possessing the professionalism to do the job in an efficient manner that meets quality standards for an audio book.

2.  Tell us about an entity that supported your writing outside of family members.

My writing ambitions have long been supported by friends and colleagues. I would say that the support of my professors when in college was the key to my development as a successful writer. They fully encouraged me to follow my dreams and learn from any mistakes along the way.

3. What was the biggest surprise to you when you first heard your work professionally narrated?

Another great question. Perhaps the biggest surprise was being able to put myself in the shoes of a listener instead of the author in being able to totally enjoy the presentation. Indeed, it was such fun for me and my wife as big fans of audio fiction to listen to my own creation. It was like an “audio movie,” using my mind’s eye to visualize the narrated book.

4. Do you think about how your work will sound in audiobook form while you're writing?

Actually, I do. With more than 40 titles in audio, I do tend to imagine the book being narrated as I write it. In many instances, I will envision the words in audio of particular scenes or characters.

5. If you didn't have to worry about licensing rights and you could choose one piece of music as a soundtrack for this book, what would it be? 

That is an interesting question. Hmm... I think it would be great if the soundtrack or transitional music for TEEN GHOST AT DEAD LAKE was Robert Cobert’s music score for the Dark Shadows TV series, a gothic soap opera that was one of my favorite shows.

6. What are you working on now?

I am now wrapping up the sequel to my bestselling young adult vampire novel, COUNT DRACULA’S TEENAGE DAUGHTER, entitled, OUT FOR BLOOD. I am excited about this second book in my Transylvanica High Series that should really please my young adult readers.

I am also looking forward to having the audio version of OUT FOR BLOOD assigned, completed, and put on sale.

The Day After Halloween

Happy Day After Halloween!

Last night the girl headed out with 4 of her friends for the annual gathering of the candy ritual. I think the part she likes best is the end of the night when the candy brokerage firm opens up on our dining room table. Let the negotiations begin - "I'll trade you 4 fun size Snickers for that $100,000 Bar! Here's what a gaggle of middle schoolers sound like during the process:




The negotiations lasted for about an hour. Does anybody like Mr. Goodbars??

This year we passed out Giant Pixie Sticks! But now it's time for the Halloween decorations to come down. They've been up since October 1st. Next year, if you find yourself with a group of middle school girls trying to decide what to dress up as for Halloween, I suggest Pigs in Blankets. It's easy, it's cheap, and it's comfortable enough for school. And really, who doesn't secretly want to wrap themselves up in a blanket all day?

Welcome to MY world...

A few minutes with author TW Brown.
Tucked away in the Pacific Northwest with my wife Denise, a Border Collie named Aoife (I pronounce it EYE-fa as opposed to the proper Irish EE-fa, just because I think it sounds prettier), a guitar collection, and an increasing number of aquariums sporting a variety of fish (cichlids are my new favorites), I live for football season when I can cheer on the Oregon Ducks and be disappointed by my Seattle Seahawks once again. I am a fan of Cookie Monster, KISS, and Dr. Who (along with most things British).

A few questions I had for TW Brown:

1. Tell us about an entity that supported your writing when you started out.

My biggest support comes from my wife. There have been times when I felt like throwing in the towel, but she always makes me see that I am fortunate to do what I love for a living. She was the one who convinced me to walk away from my day job and take it up full time.

2. How did your fascination with Ghouls, Zombies and other assorted undead come about?

I saw the original Dawn of the Dead when I was 14. A girl two rows ahead of me got sick into her popcorn. Vomiting girl plus zombies multiplied by teenage boy equals hooked. Still, as time went on, I just got so sucked into the whole thing. I was a big fan of horror, and the whole apocalypse thing is fascinating. A giant global reset…what would you do if your entire slate was wiped clean and everybody started from scratch? It is an endless supply of material.

3. What was the biggest surprise to you when you first heard your work professionally narrated?

I was terrified. I was taking the story that I had in my mind and letting somebody else put emphasis on words maybe different that I imagined. Just sticking to Ava since that is our baby, I put on my headphones and just closed my eyes. I heard “her” in all her glory. The wit and sarcasm, the somewhat selfish nature…all there. It was like seeing my son take his first steps or reliving a first kiss. As the writer, you sometimes forget little moments after you write them, but when you hear them…it is absolute magic, and that was how I felt listening to Ava.

4. In your That Ghoul Ava series, who is your intended audience and why should they read or listen to your books?

I will openly admit that I am after the female demographic with Ava. The reality is that women read more than men, and they are smart readers as well as fiercely loyal. Hooking the female audience is my goal. I think that I give them somebody with more “realness” than a Sookie or many of the other female characters that dot the crowded paranormal landscape. She is not some wilting rose or the kind of girl that needs a man to save her, but she still has a certain fragility. Plus, I think women have amazing senses of humor that get overlooked way too often.

5. Tell us about the main character in That Ghoul Ava. How would you describe Ava?

Ava is in her mid to late 30s and is still in love with the 80s era. But she is finding out some things about herself and society as a whole. She is seeing the world for the first time in a lot of ways and discovering that she is much more than she gives herself credit. Also, she is very anti-PC. She speaks her mind, and is learning to trust herself more as she goes along.

6. Can you tell us about any upcoming books/projects you’re working on?

I am hoping for a good run with my That Ghoul Ava series. I just finished the 6^th and final book of my Zomblog series (which comes out October 30^th) and just released book 7 of my DEAD series (DEAD: Reborn). I have about a half dozen projects on the table in the upcoming year, including a bleak story that is about a full scale modern day race war in the United States.

8. And finally, my daughter wants to be an author of young adult fiction when she grows up. Can you offer her any advice?

Write every single day, but do it because you love it. It is a lot like exercise—the more you do it, the better you become. Read, read, read! No writer can live in a vacuum. You have to see what others do, and study the mechanics like punctuation…English is tricky and has a lot of rules. Also, get a thick skin because, no matter how good you are, there will be people who will not like you. (Read reviews of your favorite authors’ books and see how something you love totally missed the mark for somebody else.)

My town loves a parade! What's not to love? Every year the town hosts a Pet Parade. Families bring their pets of all kinds to march up and down Broadway. It's a lovely way to spend a sunny Saturday morning. We would go even if we didn't have a pet. Our 2 cavies were ready and willing participants.

A few final thoughts on this year's Banned Books Week

My mother repeated a quote often to me when I was young - "All you have to do in this life is die." Sometimes she would add"...and pay taxes." I think the quote is attributed to Ben Franklin who said "The only thing certain is death and taxes."  My mother was trying to make a point about choices. I can choose to read a book. I can choose to leave a book on the shelf. But, what happens to my right to choose if someone doesn't allow the book on the shelf in the first place? I want my child to have access to the vault full of knowledge that reading can open for her. I want her to be like Roald Dahl's Matilda devouring every book in the library.

I want books to inspire her, to teach her, even to scare her. I want her to be able to escape into a book when there are moments she's had enough of real life.

This happens only thanks to the efforts of librarians, teachers, students, and community members who stand up and speak out for the freedom to read."

Banned Books Week brings together the entire book community –- librarians, booksellers, publishers, journalists, teachers, and readers of all types –- in shared support of the freedom to seek and to express ideas, even those some consider unorthodox or unpopular."

Imagine being arrested for selling a book...

A Clockwork Orange, by Anthony Burgess -  In 1973 a bookseller in Orem, UT was arrested for selling the novel. Charges were later dropped, but the book seller was forced to close the store and relocate to another city.

or

banning a book for being too accurate in portraying historical events...

A Farewell to Arms, by Ernest Hemingway - Banned in Italy (1929) because of its painfully accurate account of the Italian retreat from Caporetto, Italy.


I'm happy to report my local library recognizes Banned Books Week:

Markus Zusak, in his novel A Book Thief,  created a young protagonist who loved books before she even knew how to read them. She braved great dangers to collect and read books. Liesel even plucked a book from the flames during a Nazi book burning campaign. The author participated in Virtual Read-Out in recognition of Banned Books Week:

And finally, as an audiobook narrator, I wanted to post a little excerpt from a classic novel that has faced its share of being banned. Written in 1722 by Daniel Defoe, the complete title says is all:

The Fortunes and Misfortunes of the Famous Moll Flanders, etc. Who was Born in Newgate, and during a Life of continu’d Variety for Threescore Years, besides her Childhood, was Twelve Year a Whore, five times a Wife (whereof once to her own Brother), Twelve Year a Thief, Eight Year a Transported Felon in Virginia, at last grew Rich, liv’d Honest, and died a Penitent. Written from her own Memorandums.

Megan Hilty at the Fairmont

Saturday in San Francisco started off with a bit of rain. The girl and I were stuck inside a coffee shop while my thoughtful and lovely husband brought the car around for us. Here's what it sounded like while we waited outside under the awning: Although the weather was making us want to curl up by the fireplace and read all night, we had opening night tickets to the Bay Area Cabaret Series. Performances are in the Venetian Room at the historic and gorgeous Fairmont Hotel on Nob Hill.

The performer was Megan Hilty, an amazing singer, stage performer, and star of the TV show Smash. I'm a big fan of seeing singers perform in a cabaret setting. It's an intimate and relaxed experience for the crowd. The audience gave her a standing ovation as she walked out onto the stage. San Francisco loves Megan Hilty! Here's her entrance and part of her opening number: She performed some standards, some songs from her new album, and a few numbers from Smash, including the beautiful ballad Second Hand White Baby Grand. She and boyfriend Brian Gallagher, also her guitar player, performed Suddenly Seymour from Little Shop of Horrors. Mostly, she did what she does best, sang big! See what I mean - That's Life sung as a duet with her soulful piano player, Matt Cusson: What a night! Her closing number was Diamonds Are A Girl's Best Friend. She came out for two encores, one of which was Popular from her role as Glinda in Wicked! The crowd adored her. She's funny and personable and just an incredible performer. She has a new album out, too.

Audio Diary - Wednesday

I got the girl off to 8th grade 10 minutes late on Wednesday. It sounded like this:




She's a very understanding girl! Don't know if you noticed, but we were in the car listening to the audiobook version of Shiver by Maggie Stiefvater. It's narrated by Jenna Lamia & David Ledoux. After a road trip to Tahoe last weekend, we're deep into this one. I can't say that the girl is enjoying it, though. So, listening to this has put us on a quest to find a book that has less kissing and more SAT words. Her wish. Not that she doesn't (or shouldn't) enjoy some light reading. She's just not quite into the dating, romance, make-up, fashion thing, yet. I'm having a dickens of a time finding books that will satisfy her 8th grade brain. ALL recommendations are welcome!


Until we find the next great teen/YA read, she's planning a reread of an old favorite. Here's her not so subtle hint:

Sounds of the Giants

If you're going to take an afternoon off from work a great way to spend it is at the Ballpark! I stepped out of my booth one afternoon last week to sit in the bleachers at a San Francisco Giants game.  While I was standing near the Willie Mays statue just outside the Ballpark, I collected this audio:
